What the external oil cooler will do is help to keep the oil cooler at a given ambient temperature and load than it would be without the cooler -- hence its name. It will not keep the pressure at a level it would not be given a particular oil temperature and a given level of wear. But since it keeps the oil cooler, it will help keep the pressure above what it would be if the oil were hotter (as it would be without the cooler).

Engine worn? Pressure will be lower than it would at a given oil temperature on a new engine. Perhaps the degree of wear will make a difference as to whether the cooler helps to maintain pressure where it should be or not. Less wear, less pressure drop at a given temperature. But more wear, more pressure drop. Reverse that: Higher temperature, more pressure drop at a given level of wear. Lower temperature, less pressure drop at a given level of wear.
