Since you're interested in this coolant circuit .. you may find it interesting to note that .... pretty sure, due to the two-door nature of the thermostat, it operates in two states ( with overlap I would imagine ) .. during warm up, when main coolant flow is blocked ( except for heater circuit ) coolant flows through the oil cooler ( but not main circuit ) to help warm up the oil. later, when things are fully warmed up, everything is 'full cool' ..engine, oil cooler etc. it's moot, as it only fits together one way. We'll just trust they knew what they were doing. I happen to have a offical VW Booklet that is an introduction to the 'new' 2.1 engine and cooling system ..for VW dealer techs I image. this book points out about a dozen ways the 2.1 cooling system is improved over the previous 1.9 waterboxers. yeah, just 'put it together.' next we'll be talking about 'what type coolant' .. and then 'bleeding' , right ?
