Well, I happen to own one of these - a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen - and I can tell you that I, for one, would not have purchased the diesel (with the roughly $5k upcharge) had I known the "eco" part of the eco-diesel moniker was a fraud. Factor in that my resale value has now tanked, and the fix is likely to erode the fuel mileage, but more importantly, the longevity of the engine (who knows for sure, but I'm betting it will) and thereby eliminating all advantages of having the diesel, this is far more than a "gee who really cares about NOX emissions anyway" issue. If this in fact turns out to be the case, then I have been defrauded out of $5K just for starters, plus the longevity hit, resale hit, plus fuel cost hit.

My guess is that the VW diesels are now history. My 2015 Golf 1.8t has better power, and gets very close to the same fuel economy. Factoring the (until just recently) higher cost of diesel relative to gasoline, the diesel offers zero tangible benefits. Unless, and until, of course, we find the gasser ECUs are fudged too...

Actually James makes a very valid point, in that both fuel efficiency and ta= ilpipe emissions must be considered. If VW cuts tailpipe emissions in terms o= f PPM at the expense of fuel economy, what is the net effect? Consideration s= hould be given to measuring emissions output per mile, along with minimal fu= el use. That would be something useful. Angus
