Interesting. I've been in Germany several times in the last year, and saw very few Vanagons.  East, West and South, hardly saw any.  I was, however, in South Africa in June and July, and they were everywhere!  Saw a dozen or more every day just driving to work and back.  Most all are the 2.5L 5cyl gassers.  Felt kinda homey....

 I stood on many street corners today in various German towns
 with plenty of
 VW diesels puffing away.....It didn't seem to bother me. :)
 
 I even spotted at least 10 Vanagon's
 too!   Today was a good day for
 Vanagon spotting, best one yet.
