You may need the entire assembly. Usually one of the cable guides comes off the mechanism, and then you end up with a big tangle of cable at the motor. The window motor can be removed from the window riser. So you can replace them separately. While you have the panel off, you should check that you don't have any chafing or cracks on the wires that go through the door to the main cabin. Also make sure your window channel weatherstripping is good - when this goes bad it can cause extra stress on the motor.

For months now my passenger window sounded like the gears were eating
themselves. A few days ago it stopped the grinding noise and now moves
very slowly up/down. I've used it seldom since I bought the Vanagon in
July. I'm about to replace the door panel so wondered if I should visit
the local LKQs in anticipation of the need for repair parts.

Anyone had this lovely VW experience with repair advice to share before I
open up the door? Oh, and parts/source numbers will get you a pint at The
Lucky Labrador next Monday!
