I've run VDO cockpit series gauges on my 90 GL since I bought it in 1997. In addition to the pressure/temp gauges, I added a vacuum gauge to see how little throttle I needed to push on to keep the engine from losing rpms on the highway. I also modified both gauges with a toggle switch for each one and added fuel pressure sending unit in the pressured side of the line and a water temp sender in the cooling system. The more you know about the motor's condition, the more at ease you are behind the wheel. My Boston Bob overhaul from 2001 still has awesome oil pressure after close to 150k on it. always above that mythical 10 psi/1000rpm number the experts keep touting, regardless of the oil temp.

FWIW, I have a pressure gauge but not a temperature gauge. I have heard arguments that it is more important to know the oil temperature than the oil pressure, but wasn't convinced. My former mechanic recommended a pressure gauge, but to be sure to maintain the dual warning system in good working order. BTW, for anyone in Oklahoma, that former mechanic is Darrel Cook, of Darrel's Hobby Shop in Norman Oklahoma. Find him on the Road Haus shop listings. Super VW (and especially Vanagon) mechanic. mcneely
