Beetle engine cases were truly consumable. There were so many around and engine overhauls were such an industry by itself that snap in drill powered align bore set ups were readily available. Most any busy VW shop had one and used it almost as often as the brake lathe. Problem was they were not that consistent especially since they used the seal opening on the flywheel side and the outside oil slinger bore on the pulley side for alignment. Once you got into the type 4 and especially the Waterboxer no such cheap bars are available so to do align bores you need some proper equipment and you have to know what you are doing. The aluminum also reduced the need as the cases don’t pound out as easy and the Waterboxer does not overheat and cause the case to shuffle and destroy the muddle bearing wen like the type 4 engines did. VW reman engines reached a point that almost all used new engine cases. Welded heads, reground cranks and cams refaced lifters yep but new cases. Every VW Vanagon engine I purchased (~8) had a new case. The last 3 had new heads cast in Poland. Whish they were still available.

I remember from my days building 1600 cc air cooleds that "align boring" was done for every rebuild because the cases pounded out easily. This does not appear to be done for the WBX cases, is it not possible or just not bothered with? I know the metallurgy is better, but this still seems to be a problem.

Bearing wear is really a symptom of something else going on. I have seen low oil pressure due to bad rod bearings, cam shaft bearings disintegrating and the oil overheating. The most common cause of low oil pressure on the water boxer is the case being shot. Many rebuilders or local shops completely miss this. When the engine gets hot not only does the oil pressure go down due the lower viscosity but the case expands and the main bearing become loser causing oil pressure to be lost inside. When really bad you can feel them under load, sort of a low speed rumble or groan. On a tired engine an oversized pump may just add to the leaks and oil burning due to the increased volume. When the tolerances are not there you will more flow but not always more pressure.

Yes, the question is why do you want to replace it? Trying to fix low oil pressure with a new or bigger pump won't solve the underlying problem for long--bearing wear.

yes, on all three types of engines that come in vanagons.

I've never believed in replacing oil pumps myself much tho.

perhaps a larger/higher performance one once in a great while.
