Dave,

I'm not sure how to explain the smell of rich fuel with the suggestion I was going to make unless there are a couple of things going on.

However you did mess with the fuel system in the sense that you placed a new fuel pump on that vanagon. DO you still have the square filter between the tank and the pump? If so have you changed it lately and what did it look like when you did?

What is the state of your gas tank? My vanagon (an 85) likes to every once in a while remind me that it has an old gas tank that likes to get obstructed before that filter or at the filter. It would idle fine, but get ready to drive and give it gas an it would just buck, lurch and basically not go.

I blew air into the tank until I heard the bubbles and re-settle the mess/crud in the tank. Then changed the square filter (I keep spares) with a fresh one. I do this every so often to keep things moving.

I have been too cheap for a new gas tank, but what I do keeps it going.

This would be a simple check, that could explain the vanagon idling fine, but then crapping out under load.

HTH, Tony
