Reasonable plans seem to be:

Spend a night in the La Quinta Hotel in San Ysidro, California, just north of the Mexican border.

Spend the second night in Catavina, tiny little town with a few hotels.

I've only stayed at Hotel Mision Catavina, I hear the other hotels are a little skanky.

Venture out fifty yards from the back of the hotel and you are in the middle of the desert with Cacti and Elephant Trees.

You can probably camp there but I would ask the hotelier first.

Spend the third night in San Ignacio at San Ignacio Springs Bed & Breakfast.

It's not really a bed and breakfast but a collection of yurts and a good restaurant.

You can probably camp there also but I would ask first.

Drive out to whale watching camp the next day.

It's been a few years since we've done this - Beware that the dirt road will try to shake and rattle your van apart, maybe things have improved since.

My only safety advice is do not stop from the Mexican border until you are south of Ensinada, things should go great from there.
