Tyler, AFAIK rock salt is not used on any roads in Oregon, except on I-5 near the California border.

However, magnesium chloride is used on Bend, County, and State roads. It is applied to bare pavement before storms, and feels greasy as you drive on it. It is corrosive, but not nearly as much as rock salt. It supposedly hinders the formation of ice on pavement.

County and State also apply volcanic cinders to aid traction at curves, hills, and intersections. City of Bend has changed from cinders to crushed basalt for that purpose, because of air pollution problems from pulverized cinders.

BTW, we had 14" of fresh snow over Thanksgiving.

Regards, Vern
