I have done the "capacitor fix" with good results back in the days before
my subie conversion. It won't help unless you really have the problem with
the resonant vibration of the AFM wiper as described in the original
literature. As Dennis said, there are other, more common causes for
problems that are mis-labeled as "vanagon syndrome".
Electronic knowledge and experience is a very good thing as vehicles become
more electonic. A degree in physics gave me a theoretical background and a
good friend helped me gain practical esperience back in the 1970's. That
is really the best way to learn.
There are a number of people on this list with similar skills. David B.
comes to mind a one who is patient and determined enough to delve into the
vanagon specific electronics and explain them to rest of us.
Bentley circuit diagrams however continue to challenge me. :-)
