Actually, what GW is referring to is the housing itself, there is no separate flange like you need for the diesel starter. That's why they call it their "custom designed" gear reduction starter. The mounting "flange" that is cast into the housing is different, so they are the only source.

The recommended Bosch SR0408X/409X starter for use with the WestyVentures adapter is also gear reduction starter. I have the adapter, and I'll likely install the diesel starter in my '85 soon. I installed the GW starter on my son's '87. Either is a good choice, especially considering the stock starters were weak to begin with, and are only available as rebuilds of varying quality now.

Hmmm....

From the GW web page:

"• Exclusive mounting flange ensures ample clearance for a perfect fit"

Sure. If it was out of warranty (e.g. they don't warrant it when used with an engine conversion), assuming the a TDI gear reduction starter fits the GW mounting flange, why not? Just one example but Rockauto.com shows ~ $100 - $170 USD for new TDI starters. One might be able to shop around for price? However. If I got the Mullendore adaptor plate and a new TDI starter, I'm saving some bucks. And Karls web page specifies that the SR0408X/409X starters are gear reduction types.

Does anyone know if GW assembles their reduction starter from various Bosch or other parts?

Neil.
