as I wrote earlier .. the hose connection at the bottom of the coolant Pressure Bottle .. in whatever form , is the one that feeds coolant to the water pump.

the upper Pressure Bottle Connection is merely a small air bleed hose connection .. so that any air in the engine is separated out to that air space that you see at the top of the Pressure Bottle sometimes.

if you end up with all kinds of various I4 VW cyldiner head coolant flanges .. you may get a plastic one that has a small bleed nipple right on it....to give you an idea of the need for an small air-bleed hose there. ..from the side of the cylinder head.

VW is very smart about that ...I first noticed this 'full time small air bleed' arrangement on a Rabbit like in the 80's ... the Pressure Bottle is slightly above the top of the radiator in a Rabbit .. there was a small hose from the top of the radiator going to the pressure bottle .. that had a small full time flow , thus, if there was any air in the system, it got separated out just by the water pump pumping .. also for filling ...when filling an engine with coolant , especially the first time, there has to be a way for air to get out of the engine ( just like gas tanks have that same need for refueling ).

there's one conversion I used to work on a guy for ... whoever built it ( I know who but won't say ...I've always been dissapointed in their conversion work ) ... there is zero capability for air to escape that engine while filling coolant ( like after repairing a small hose on the bottom of the engine ). I had to remove a temperature sensor to let air out, so coolant could get into the engine , just to fill it after a minor hose repair ! whatever anyone does on hoses.. just COPY the factory Diesel Vanagon hose layout exactly ..it's more evolved and subtle than it appears to be at first glance.

That's how it's done to convert over to the new style tank. Otherwise the hoses available these days don't stand a chance of fitting. I can see that that is a change that was made from before and now I'm having a problem. I don'tunderstand how it could be a problem, but it certainly is coincidental with the problem I'm having. So I'm interested in knowing more. > >> On Dec 10, 2015, at 2:02 PM, Ralph Meyermann <ralphmeyermann@GMAIL.COM> wrote: >> >> Make sure coolant is coming into the tank from the top fitting. >>> On Dec 10, 2015 2:00 PM, "Ralph Meyermann" <ralphmeyermann@gmail.com> wrote: >>> >>> I got my diesel compression tester kit from parts place.
