The rocker assembly has to be removed for the pushrods to drop. The rocker
has a deep cup over the rod end, and so does the lifter.

I think the Bentley is just over cautious to be sure you don't bend a rod
when you reassemble an engine.

Bentley says to back out the adjusting screw until it is flush with the
rocker arm, then turn engine to TDC on #1 and start from there.



If I back out the screws that far, don't I run the risk of the pushrods
dropping out of the lifters?
