I know that most here already know this stuff but I found the GW starter article enlightening

http://www.gowesty.com/tech-article-details.php?id=141

I'd gotten the starter rebuilt on my '88 using 2 cores I supplied. It's had a flat spot since install. This is exacerbated by heat. Even after installing a new starter bushing in clutch housing, issue is still present. The issue may well be the large long wire from battery to starter B+ post (there is visible corrosion) but I really have to question the rebuild quality and moreover, the quality of cores provided.

This looks like a useful video (youtube: Bosch 110 starter rebuild) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJM2veUNBc0

I too would be of the Mullendore adaptor + new TDI install camp as I wouldn't be tied to one manufacture.

Neil.
