So so relying on the gauge you were thinking that you're overheating when the needle pegs and the light flashes? Or is it real hot back there? I'm just wondering if it really is overheating or if is a faulty gauge like in my case I thought I had a head gasket leak but eventually after reading about it on the Vanagon forum I realized that it was just my gauge and my engine doesn't have a head gasket leak after all. I unplugged the coolant level sensor  at the tank and drove around and the needle was normal,no coolant loss or hot engine.

Before I drove it, I opened the coolant Enough to burp a bunch of hot air out through the coolant tank. Then drove about 12 of those 15 miles just fine. The last 3 miles it started to overheat again. I pulled over and parked it again and the temperatures dropped. Got to be a head gasket or thermostat wouldn't you think?
