Get you tape measure and some imagination. Measure the width of the engine
compartment opening and add 6 inches to each side. Measure how deep it is
from the top of the compartment opening to that hole in the top of the
engine case above the crank pulley.
Go to local hardware or electrical supply and get a length of uni-strut
1-1/2 inch or some other suitable support to stretch over the engine
opening.
Get a 3/8 open hook as long as possible with some nuts and washers, You will
want it to able to hook onto the engine and go through one of the holes on
that support bar you making.
Use the stuff to well, support the engine using the hole above the pulley.
Just take some of the weight off the mounts, gently.
Remove the 4 10mm bots-nuts holding the mounts to the cross bar. You may
need to remove the oil filter and hopefully someone didn't put the 2 middle
ones in backwards making the exhaust pipe an obstacle. Also get that 8mm nut
holding on the heat shield.
Remove the 4 nut-bolt-washer-plate assemblies holding the bar up. The bar
will drop down now. It will take some negotiating to get it out pas the rear
exhaust pipe.
Up top remove the belts. Using a long wobble extension and a quality 6 point
socket you can get the 4 8mm nuts on the mounts.
Use good hardware. For the support bar to engine note the original
installation was with extra thick washers and all metal lock nuts. tness
While there check the bracket to engine bolts for tightness. These sometimes
break. If replacing use P.C. 10.9 including rated washers.

Subject: R&R engine mounts on 1989 Westfalia
I'm looking for best practices info on replacing my 4 rear engine mounts.
Looking at Bentley it shows the mounts attached between the carrier
(moustache bar) and the engine support. I had originally thought that the
way to proceed would be to leave the engine support in place and remove the
carrier bar with the old mounts attached. Now I am not sure if I should...
1) remove the carrier bar leaving the mounts attached to the engine support
and then remove them separately or...
2) remove the carrier bar with the mounts attached and then remove them from
the bar or...
3) remove the carrier bar, mounts, and engine support as a unit or...
4) someone's better method
I'd like to avoid removing the cat and muffler if reasonable.
Thx
Pat
