New York now follows the CARB including engine conversions. Other states are-will be following. We don't currently have emissions testing, (visual only) for 95 and earlier. Using a 96 and later engine/controls puts you there.

Yes, it can be used anywhere but California. Join the Yahoo! Groups "subaruvanagon" list and post it there. Or I can post it for you. If it's low mileage (under 100k) they could get some bucks for it, probably more than insurance will pay. Collision damage has to be from the sides or rear to make it worth pulling, and you need the wiring harness, ECU, and a bunch of other stuff, which requires removing the dash.

Small Car, a conversion shop, is currently selling a 2001 engine with new head gaskets and timing belt for $3895 as part of their conversion service: https://smallcar.com/conversions/vanagon-2.2-and-2.5l-conversions.html (scroll down).

Someone can use this engine!

Hi all,

I have a friend whose son just wrecked their 2001 Subaru Outback. She's asking if anybody needs parts and I immediately wondered if the engine might be useable for a swap into a Vanagon. Not that I'm looking to do that, but if anybody on the list is looking to do so . . .

Marc Perdue, in Central Va.
