At first drive, it will whirl from the start, 0 mph. As I drive a bit more, the whirling will be at higher and higher speeds and not at lower speeds.

I tried slowing down, and it does go away, but then comes back as I gain speed again. Eventually it's gone.

Also, try immediately slowing down until the chattering stops. When mine does this it's always on the first time of the day accelerating to highway speed, probably at fifty-some mph. If I ease off the gas and coast down a few mph it will stop, and won't be back for the rest of the day.

I was slower than you have been to realize it was the head chattering and not the cable; and so far I always manage to forget until the next time it happens.

VDO apparently fixed this late in production. Here's the tech bulletin summary from Unca Joel by way of syncro.org:
