Neil,

I do have some decent chain lube called Phil Wood Tenacious Oil, that I use on my bicycles. I also have the standard white lithium grease stuff. I have small syringes with various fine plastic and metal tips that I can use to place the lube too. I'll give it a try.

I can't speak to specific lubes, but have read that some have good success by sneaking in lube at shaft where it passes through body at speedo rear and at pickup cup bearing and point needle passes through the cross member. This should be possible with needle still on. Relevant images of diesel speedo:

I'd think that if lube used at shaft were too thin, it would wash away any good remaining OEM grease at shaft. Were it me, I'd again mix up a "slurry" of grease then apply that to shaft area. It should work it's way in and "stay". Chain lube (not that thin stuff) may also work here.
