Thanks for all the suggestions. This engine was/is being rebuilt by a very experienced rebuilder. Has built many, many aircooled and WBX engines over the years. I've got one of his in my 88' GL right now installed in year 2000. He confessed that this had him stumped. He starts tomorrow, even though it's New Years, disassembly piece by piece to find the problem. I'm sure he will, but how far down he will have to go as anybodies guess!
