Replaceable oil filters came in with hydraulic lifters. Before then all VWs had only cleanable pickup screens to filter out the "big stuff".

Naw, it had the 1600cc dual-port. No oil filter and no particularly easy way to install one. Man's got to change the oil every 1,500 miles. But it was a good excuse to adjust the valves anyway.
