I drive through Bend every few years and think the roundabouts are an
improvement. Have used them all over the states and if they are the
appropriate size and have/not the appropriate spurs they work MUCH better
than stopped intersections. Aspen has a few that were horrendous simply
because, as a tourist, there were too many signs/spurs to taken in whilst
moving around the roundabout at even 20 mph or so. Boston has the most
'aggressive' drivers I've seen and their roundabouts and 7 spur 400 year
old intersections sans roundabouts are the worst driving situations I've
ever seen. In these western united States roundabouts seem to be more and
more common.
As for yuppies and their busses or vanagons, matters little to me if they
don't flash the peace sign as long as they continue the VW culture in some
way.
