Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the tips and good advice. I especially wanted to make sure that there wasn't something else I was missing, like an incompatible part. It is possible that the throwout bearing had slipped down the input shaft and I will follow the advice to tie the clutch lever up so it cannot. My son's coming out again on Thursday and we'll give it another try. I'll let you know how it goes.
