Coolant circulating heaters DO work, Every other motor that has what is sometimes called a "tank heater", they do perform their function as designed...some better than others. The alternative is a heated garage. Zoning and real estate prices in Bend, Oregon probably preclude that..... Get the coolant circulating type heater. Find a way to plug in your vanagon when you return to your Casa at night, but with the power off. It normally doesn't need to suck electricity all night, just an hour or two in the AM is enough to get the oil inside warmed up and circulating better. Every house I build in a cold climate, I make sure to install some kinda switched outside plug for my vehicle's tank heaters....Get up, start the coffee and switch on the vehicle tank heaters...

As if Diesel didn't have enough negative press here in the US........One major issue with diesel vehicles is cold weather operation...Diesel fuel does NOT like cold much... The fuel gets thick, too, just like the oil in the crankcase...My friends in Jackson Hole who drove diesels in the winter....they often had to stop by the parking lot at the Ski Hill during the work day and fire up their vehicles a couple of times, when it was sub-zero temps....in order to be sure to have flowing fuel after being parked outside all day... it's -20f there in Jackson today.....
