I use a chisel and a hammer to get a point started and then a hammer and a putty knife to chase the slot all the way around. Be sure to remove the two screws in there. Breaking off the tabs as Ken suggests will work, but then you lose the best means of reassembling the thing--drilling holes in the tabs and using small cable ties.
