Of course the steering knuckle part number did change at the same time. The spindle is part of the knuckle and the spindle diameter increased, requiring a bearing with a larger inside diameter.

The VW parts data is slightly confusing because it only shows current replacement part numbers and not original part numbers. In this case it shows the same later replacement part number for all of 84 but in the notes section it says vehicles before that vin number need the later bearing when that later number spindle is fitted to earlier vans.
