Ah, thanks Mark, that makes sense. Thanks. I was primed for that mistake because I've got two rear hatch latches with identical part numbers stamped right into them; but one is suitable for use with my power locks and the other physically interferes and snags the electric actuator, as I discovered the hard way. The shape of the actuating bar for opening the latch (that the button presses on) is radically different between them and I thought that was pretty rude of VW not to change the p/n.
