First check to see if the lower ball joints even need to be replaced. They are easily checked. If the boots are still good and the play is less than 1/8" no need to change them. With the van jacked off the ground use a large pair of groove lock (Channel Locks) and grab the bottom of the joint and the mount where the stud-nut is on the spindle. Give a real good squeeze. If little paly and no knocking noises leave them. If they do need to be replaced you can strip the spindle and remove it. Then bring it to a shop to get the joint pressed into the spindle. As part of your overhaul consider the radius rod and lower control arm mounts.

I am soon to replace the bushings and ball joints on the front of my 88 GL.
I can manage the upper ball joints and bushings myself. But I question the wisdom of tackling the lower ones on my own. Can tthe lower ones be done first (by a shop) and the later the uppers done by me? Recommendations?
