All S-10 second generation, 95+, require the dash to be removed. So it's fairly common.

Very true. I thought we were going to have to that on a 12 year old Toyota, but reverse flushing the heater core did the job.

And Chev Cavaliers of certain ages are famous for needing their dashes opened up or removed to deal with failing heat and AC door flaps - there's even YouTube videos on how to do it.
