This usually happens because one of the 2 wires to the power steering pump pressure switch gets shorted to engine metal. If the belt is too short it moves the switch to where it is closer. If the original flag spade ends are replaced with straight spade ends it also makes it more likely to happen. It is a shame that VW put an unfused hot wire in such a vulnerable location. The wire comes from the injection harness so the whole harness can get ruined as you know. Mark John Rodgers wrote: > I have found my wiring harness is fried.
