Essentially, all these specialty cars work….for some people, but rarely for all, due to the availability of their fuel sources.

Gas is everywhere. Diesel nearly as ubiquitous. Electric charging stations are common, in the big cities, and relatively available in many suburbs (Tesla specific ones are not nearly as common, but they have adapters for the other style).

Hydrogen sources are rare.

My Volt (plug in hybrid) works well for me, as nearly all my driving of it, falls within its range on electricity (25 miles per charge in the depths of winter, up to 50 miles per charge in the summer). But if I didn’t have the free charger at work (and at home), it wouldn’t be nearly as convenient.

Quite honestly, I’d drive a Chevy Bolt (200 mile range on a charge) and trade in my Volt, since I have my vans as backup vehicles for longer range drives, if I hadn’t just gotten my Volt last year.

I wish that the plug in hybrid technology would spread to other vehicles (like a good replacement for our Vanagons), as I think it is the technology of the future. I know Volvo is implementing it with the T8 drive train on the XC90 and upcoming S90. There is still room for innovation in this realm.
