For the 14 inch steel wheels you are limited to a tire width of 215, (due to
the 5.5 inch wheel width) and you want a minimum load index of 97 as was
used on the 87 and later vans with the 205/70-14 reinforced sidewall tires.
You will also want a minimum inflation pressure rating of 44 psi of
following the tire placard for those latter vans. As such your choices are
as follows:
185/80-14 load range C or D. Sometimes labeled as 185R14. This is the
original size.
205/70-14XL. This tire again was used as an option on the 87 and later vans,
usually with the alloy wheels. Reinforced sidewall, usual load index of
current offerings is 98. These are getting very hard to find now.
Some including me have used 215/70-14. The slight increase in size offers
some increase in capacity but this is a marginal fitment. The load index for
this tire is only 96, 1,554 pounds. This is very close to the original
205/70-14 tire which was 1,580 pounds. If using this size be sure it can be
inflated to 44 psi. Many are designed to only be inflated to 32 or 35 psi.
195/80-14 load range C or D. This is slightly taller and wider and a good
fit.

I need recommendations on whether to buy taller and/or wider tires for my
'83 Vanagon Westy, but I don't want to bother anyone because I know this has
been discussed, probably ad nauseam, so if someone could simply show me the
'search' engine for this list, I'd appreciate it.
The tire man, who comes highly recommended by the pool supply folks, said to
match what I have on there now I should get Uniroyal Tiger Pav? (cant read
the last word--maybe an abbreviation for 'pavement."? Part number 21570R14
(again, hard to decipher). He said they are guaranteed for 64K miles and
would cost me with the change and the balancing and so on $427.79.
But I'm wondering about the advisability and possible utility of larger
tires, both taller and wider, without changing wheels. Thanks so much for
any help, particularly in searching the archives.
