I would not upgrade the rears without upgrading the front first. Especially for the 85 which is the last year for brakes with a pad surface area that was originally designed for the 72 Bus. The rear brakes do a lot more of the stopping than many folks would think since our vans are somewhat weight neutral. When set up properly the rear drums have more surface area than your front disk pads. They don’t have the benefit though of the disc pads clamping effect. For you to do any upgrade up front you not only need to use larger wheels you also need to upgrade the steering knuckles. For an easy upgrade get the knuckles with brakes from an 86 or later van and have them installed.

Hi folks,

I just read in the Go Westy sales email that they are working on a rear disc break.

for the vanagon,Would rear disc breaks improve breaking noticeably? I’ve always heard the most braking is in the front?

As I don’t plan to upgrade wheels from my 14 inch soon, Assuming these fit with my wheels might this be a worthwhile safety upgrade?
