Eric, call me a Luddite. The front brakes do most of the work because as soon as you start to brake, the van's inertia causes it to rotate forward and place extra weight on the front wheels while relieving the rears. So the harder you brake, the less work the rears can do without starting to skid and trying to get the van to spin. The brake proportioning valve reduces pressure to the rear brakes to keep them from overpowering the fronts.
