All VW engines use aluminum heads with hardend valve seats. Regression is not an issue on them as it is with valves banging on cast seats or directly against the head material.

I run several gallons per tank of 100LL in my air-cooled engines when I can. The lead helps with the regression of the valve seats in the 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0l engines.

I don’t have a problem getting it. When they ask why I’m getting it at the airport, I just tell them I fly an ultralight airplane. Used to fly one and hope to again within a couple of years.

You can often buy "Mogas" around airports. Can't run ethanol in airplanes (for many reasons)...My bird uses 100LL (low lead) but lower compression older planes can is the 87.

It also runs leaner and cooler than straight gasoline. In a carbureted engine, running alcohol you have to almost double the size of the jets to get the mixture correct.

My understanding about the alcohol in fuel, is, that except for the enviromental factor (and that's questionable) gasohol is a rip. It simply doesn't have the btu's that gasoline has. So by adding alcohol to gasoline you get a power reduction, yet you still pay the same price. I know the corn subsidy to the farmers has to be factored in somehow. Thats a hit on our taxes.

Anybody got more?
