I think it's time for another rebuild John, this time a full one. I've heard of the replacement 3-4 sliders cracking just like the originals. Could also be a worn shift fork or worn slider detents.
I'd check with AA Transaxle on costs and shipping just for comparison. They will send you a foamed box for shipping. www.aatransaxle.com Daryl's email is still shown, but it's now run by his son Matt, whom Daryl trained before he passed.

I have been running REDLINE MT 90 for years. Change it out about every three to four years. Haven't checked the plug lately so don't know the condition. In 2000 tranny case was replaced, and slider repairs made by a very knowlegable VW mechanic. He also installed my current engine. All this was some 160,000 miles back. The tranny job was a repair, not a complete rebuild. The engine rebuild was the full the full magillah! Everything new except crankshaft and engine case. Its running strlng, but the accesories are starting to give up. Replaced the distributor, water pump, fuel pump, ECU twice. Various hoses and wires, batteries, alternator a few times, powersteering pump and rack. Overall the vehicle is rapidly approaching 300, 000 miles. But -it takes a licking but keeps on ticking!
