HI John,
160K miles on a transaxle 'repair' is a LOT of miles .
MT 90 has fallen out of favor. Ask Ken at German Transaxle..
Redline changed the formula . I helps with smooth shifting, but may not
be best for gear life.
I havn't used any in years.
German Transaxle uses Ultraguard Synthetic.
actual NEW connection rods ....I suspect not.
Same for the heads...tho AMC heads are New for sure, and even those
should have better exhaust valves put in right out of the box.
Hey ..if you got a NEW 2.1 camshaft ...I'd be interested in where. I did
a rebuild a while back where I had plenty of budjet. Could not find a
New Camshaft anywhere at any price ...had to settle for a reground.
Lots of life left in that Van ...
like an aircraft, if you keep the basic frame/body/chassis
corrosion-free and properly maintained ..
there's no upper limit on life.
Water pumps ..those only last on a 2.1 around 70K miles in my experience.
I just had an 86 with a dead ECU ..
'usually' those last really , really well.
I now have Three 2.1 ECU's for sale cheap if anyone wants to play around
inside them ..
I have heard numerous times that the components don't fail...just the
soldered joints.
They could be repairable.
if anyone knows someone who buys ECU cores, let me know please.
yeah ...With even 'some half-decent' care and understanding Vanagons are
awesome ..
just can't kill 'em.
lol...my inventory is 7 good running Vanagons and 4 parts vans.
Need to Reduce and cut back !
I could say 'entire Vanagon business for sale.' Location So. Oregon,
a zero rust climate btw.
I've been using German Transaxle in Bend, OR, for over 20 years.
