I hate tailgaters, too, and will not allow them to tailgate me, unless they want to go verrrry slooooow.

First, I will assume that the tailgated driver is not hogging a faster lane if applicable, nor so slow they should be using turnouts on a single-lane road, but not using them.

I had thought of putting a bumper sticker with "The closer you get, the slower I go" on it, but that is fodder for the crazed, self-righteous speed tailgatin' folks out there to hassle you even more. Interestingly enough, I was in a bad mood, and saw one of those stickers and felt angry at them. Fortunately, I had no road rage going, so just drove without any confrontation. So I have decided not to put one of those on my cars.

I tap the brakes as others have suggested, and sometimes, if in a vehicle where the other driver can see me, I will give a hand signal, no, not the Bird, as I want to calm them down rather than enrage them.

If that does not work, I just go slower and slower until they get the idea and back off or pass. I just hope that when that a-hole passes and gets slammed head-on or goes off the road, that they do not cause any injury or suffering to innocent folks.

In earlier days, with my then-new Rabbit GTI, sometimes I was tailgated on a busy freeway, where traffic would not have allowed the tailgater to go any faster no matter what. Once or twice I was in second gear in the fast lane with traffic whizzing past in the other lanes, but Tailgater stubbornly would not get off my rear. Finally, when they passed me, I stomped the accelerator, and being a GTI, it did accelerate! I would not let them get in front of me in the fast lane. They sometimes got back in close behind me, and this would repeat a few times. Sometimes I even got in the lane next to them and boxed them in by slowing or speeding, just to mess with them for being such a fool.

Once one of these idiots got off the freeway where I did, and I could see they were going to follow me to wherever I parked. So I simply parked in front of the nearest police station, and the fool drove off.

Still alive!

Ron

I would love to have a bumper sticker made that says:

The Closer You Get, The Slower I Go

Since we have a thread going on avoiding rear ending the guy in front of you I have a serious question to pose here. About being tailgated, especially at highway speeds.

First, let me describe the situation I encountered at least twice on a long trip last Fall. And I'm sure others have also.

Coming down a long, winding pass Bubba in his monster pickup pulls up behind me so close that I can't see his headlights in the mirror. I'm traveling at or close to the speed limit and the road, two lane and to many blind curves for Bubba to try to pass me (he does have that much sense), is not one that I'm going to try to go any faster. And no turnouts appearing. So, what should I do? And what is the law saying for me? (I know he is breaking the law, following to close)

How should I handle this?

If I try to speed up I risk coming up on a curve that I have to slam on the brakes to slow down for. And find Bubba half way into my lower bed. Even if a turnout appears on my side of the road if I brake to pull over Bubba is probably going to hit me.

On one of these occasions I just took my foot off the gas and slowed down to almost a stop before Bubba turned out and passed me. On the other occasion I did the same, slowed down and the other driver took the hint and dropped back, not to a safe distance but much better than they had been driving.

But again my question is how do you handle that situation? And since you are driving a Bus or a Vanagon don't tello me this hasn't happened to you :)
