 Haven't so far found a single vanagon tranny rebuilder in
 the Southeast.
 It's really hard to believe. There used to be two in Alabama
 near here but
 one quit doing it, and the other died. What a bummer!

Don't know anyone in the Southeast, but Arizona Transaxle (http://aztransaxle.com/) here in Phoenix rebuilt mine a couple of years ago.  Most the shops around here use them, and they usually have one that can be built quickly while yours is on the way there for exchange.  I had mine built with a taller 4th gear, and the oiling plate mods for a great price (around $1900 IIRC - the oil plates were ~$100 of that, and the 4th gear about ~$350).  Don't have tons of miles on mine, so I can't swear to longevity, but I know several Vanagon owners with lots of miles on theirs without problem.  Worth a call...
