Hi Jason
I have had issues with the 1.9L that I thought was the Vanagon
Syndrome and it wasn't.
Here were the 2 issues I had.
Broken old wire harness to Temp 2 sensor and another wire to the O2
sensor was also intermittent.
Other issue was the lifters were overcharging and floating the valves
so lost compression in a cylinder while driving. Adjusted the valves
to just touching the valve and never had that problem again.
Check your harness from the age and heat it has gone through it can
break internally and give all sorts of crap info to the ECU
