G stands for Graz. The G means it was built in Austria, not Germany.

When the Hanover Germany plant switched over to making the T4 the 2wd production of T3 increased in Graz to take up some of the demand that remained for the old workhorse. Prior to this it was Syncros that were built in Graz while 2wd were built in Hanover.

This is a little amusing because in the US we think of there being a year gap between T3 and T4 while in reality there was a 2 year overlap.
