in retrospect VW was foolish to take that risk, like they'd never get caught, ....... in many counties, and on 100's of thousands of cars.

About as dumb as Madoff's ponzi scheme. Cheat that big and often ...odds of getting caught increase exponentially.

Driveability and power too, not just fuel economy.
