I don't seem to have the first post for this thread, but if it's for a 2.1 L WBX, heres what I did when mine failed after many time.

Van Cafe sells an adapter that allows you to install a late model TDI starter. On the WBX. That combination eliminates the need for the starter shaft bushing. The starter itself is very powerful because it starts diesel engines. And mine cost under $100 off of EBAY.

Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-NEW-STARTER-FOR-VW-DIESEL-TDI-MANUAL-TRANS-HIGH-TORQUE-2Kw-ONE-YR-WARRANTY-/300475513229?hash=item45f5bc798d:g:p8EAAOxyJX1TFmlY&vxp=mtr

Heres the Adapter. http://www.westyventures.com/parts.html

Like Dennis said, get the Go Westy custom designed starter and forget about it. Worth every penny, and an easy install. Rebuilt starters are junk because the windings are at or near failure, and many have been rebuilt more than once, sometimes just with a cleaning and a coat of black paint. http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?v= <http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?v=&id=23528> &id=23528
