ALL Vanagons have this stud issue. Steel studs in aluminum threads in the heads, very bad engineering decision by the Germans ! After I get all the studs and bolts out drilled or otherwise and threads repaired as necessary, not easy with the engine in place, I use SS BOLTS in all locations, or for those that really want a perfect, long lasting, expensive fix, I use Time-Serts in all locations then use the SS bolts. The bolts in all locations permits the removal of the heads in the future if needed without removing the header pipes from the vehicle. The original bolts and studs scenario was done for ease of header pipe installation on the assembly line, we don’t need that scenario !
