The poster doesn't say what year or version of vanagon he has. there is no separate ignition module on 2.1's, 86 and later.

is liquid gas actually in the exhaust pipes ? or is there just a fuel leak near exhaust pipes...like cracked hose etc. ?

as for Fuel pump coninuting to run with key on, rathan shut off after a few seconds... ecu comes to mind, fuel pump relay, ground connection issues .

if the exhaust is full of gas ...sounds like injectors being held open.

I fixed a severe case of 'muffler full of gasoline, engine can't run' one time.

< btw...pull the plugs, disable the ignition, and crank the engine to see if cylinders are full of gas. Be careful as if it is, gas will shoot out of the cylinders very strongly>

that particular case happened to be a subaru engine conversion, that had been running about a month, then got into this 'muffler full of gas' thing.

It just occured to me to start checking ground wires at the ECU. there are 6 at the ECU in that system. First one checked ok ...but then the next several had like 2,200 ohm to ground. We tapped into those ground wires, ran a wire over the back seat temporarily to the engine .. Suddenly I had proper injector pulse .. got all gas out of the wrong places, and fired that mutha up just fine.

first thing, find out what the deal is on gasoline where it shouldn't be.

Might look carefully at, and test, main and fuel pump relays. and say what year and version too.
