Subject: Transmission Case Corrosion, Deterioration Repair, Ground Paths
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hi all.

On my '88 Westy, transmission case material at the shift linkage bushing mount point (image, not tranny in question): http://tinyurl.com/hfr38vo

and front mount bracket to transmission mount points (image, not tranny in question): http://tinyurl.com/zyecqly

is disintegrating and crumbling away

I'll post pics of actual corrosion soon. I'm sure this issue is nothing "new" but does anyone know if:

- depleted material at mount points causes, in part, a poor ground path to starter? - these mount points can be filed flat then furred out with a washer(s)? e.g. at tranny front mount bracket? Use stainless steel washer?

As an alternative or "safety", re this archive post:

http://gerry.vanagon.com/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind9404&L=vanagon&P=R13485

and other comments re: ground paths, would connecting just 1 new large gauge ground wire from the battery to the drivetrain be of any benefit?

As a side note, given the areas of rust I see at underside, and this case corrosion, I have to wonder if this bus sat unused for some time in a wet field with long grass or similar.

Neil.
