The Catalyst and Muffler/Tail Pipe end up in the same places so can be interchanged. The true 2.1 muffler is a larger diameter than the 1.9. Some 2.1 mufflers are the wrong size and the Go Westy muffler is also smaller than the 2.1 so with a little re work on the strap it can replace a 1.9 muffler with those brackets. Since those brackets are troublesome the best deal is to upgrade the rear carrier bracket with the 2.1 so you can use the dual brackets-straps to secure the muffler. GoWesty does or did offer their style brackets to fit both their muffler and the OEM 2.1L muffler. They also have spacers so their muffler can be used with the OEM 2.1L brackets if yours are still in good shape.

As for the engine pipes the 2.1 and 1.9 cannot be mixed. You will need to do the front/rear pipes, collector, and J pipe as a set. The rear pipe may interfere with the 1.9 thermostat housing. Some filing and pipe denting may be needed to make it fit.

A followup question - when converting from a 1.9 to 2.1 exhaust, you can’t just swap the muffler right? You have to swap all the pieces?

I have a 2.1 from Boston Bob in my 85 but am still running the original exhaust (you know what i mean) so when the time comes to replace a part, I will have to replace the whole system right if i want to convert to 2.1 exhaust?

Thanks Jeff
