I think you all must be right that something is out of spec with my
driver's side vent wing. That one whistled before and still whistles.
I did find, however, that the fit of the glass was tight and at an odd
angle. I pulled the whole assembly out, installed the glass into the
rubber with the vertical channel and the vent closed, and re-installed
it into the door, using, as Jim Felder recommended, plenty of dish
soap as lubricant. Doing so, everything slid into place very easily.
The problem is that the vent wings don't actually operate so smoothly
at this point. Perhaps that will change over time.
I had another problem with the driver's side vent wing in that the
lead piece at the bottom had deformed oddly. I don't know where to get
a replacement for that part. That may be part of my problem as well.
So, having gone through all of this, and now been criticized, albeit
indirectly, for not having done the install correctly, I have a
request of the vendors who sell these parts: Please include good
directions for how to install them. It would be a tremendous service
to our community. I know there aren't huge margins in sales of Vanagon
parts, so maybe we can help with the write-up?
Thanks for all the feedback. It's good to know others haven't had the
horrible experience I had installing these. The main window seals were
easy, even taking off the door panels, but it took a whole weekend to
get all the seals done and I know it shouldn't have. And I know it's
not due to my incompetence.

In fact, while there are some cheaper aftermarket Vanagon seals out there, I have yet to see a non-OEM version of the vent wing seal, so to the best of my knowledge this would have been the same seal no matter where you bought it. Therefore, I hate to say it but I have to agree with Frank that this sounds like an installation issue and/or something else relating to the vent wings that is out of spec. I can't think of any other explanation..
