When you say the engine oil is half gone, do you mean half way down from > "full" to "low"? Yes The dip stick only tells you when you are approx 1 quart low. It does not tell you the total volume, or lack thereof, of oil in the engine. It's there to tell you when you need to "top off" so you don't get too low.
